Fall Colors

Each fall my DH and I get away to beautiful Hood River, Oregon where we meet with a bunch of other crazy youth pastors for the weekend.  It's a wonderful time and we have decided to piggy back on the trip and make it a mini vacation for just the two of us.

So, yesterday morning, we left home and took our time getting here.  We stopped in The Dalles and visited an awesome museum.  From there, we took the scenic (old) hwy 30 and saw God's gorgeous fall colors up close and personal!

I hope they bless you like they are us:

We stayed the night in the Hood River Hotel in downtown.  We love old buildings and this fit.  We were very thankful that we had a modern portable heater to "accompany" the steam furnace since it did not come on once and the metal is cold to touch.  The breakfast here is delicious; as were our potato tacos last night.  Yummy!

El Dia en La Playa

Today really felt like vacation.  It was forecasted rain but we prayed for sun and sun we had!  If I had to define perfect, today would be it.  We found our favorite beach spot - all secluded with nobody around but us.  YAY!!!

Grandad didn't waste anytime before he was body surfing!
Not to be left out, the others joined right in.
Sometimes we played in the ocean, sometimes we played on the beach.
 Watching for a good wave...
Having a natural mud body scrub:
 Brothers:
 Sisters:
The Nana loving the sun, sea and warmth.
What Grandad did when he wasn't snorkeling or body surfing:
 Snorkeling was SO much fun!
Today was a good day.  We ate ice cream for lunch and cucumbers with lime and salt for dessert.  For supper, we are eating in.  A good cook is making us beef and shrimp fajitas, rice, beans and more plus flan for dessert.  She's also bringing limonada, our most favorite drink here.

Ta-ta for now!

Arrival

My, 2:00 AM came mighty early to one who didn't go to bed until 12:30 and Roy didn't even go to bed!  The kids got maybe 3 1/2 hrs of sleep...

After Grandad & Nana got to our home, we loaded up at 3 AM sharp and headed to Dutch Bros for their rocking middle of the night 4 shot special.

No problems at any of our airports -- transfers were smooth and thankfully, there is nothing exciting to report!

Rental car from Gecko Rentals is as we remembered so we're glad about that.  Nice mini van that is the perfect size for the 8 of us.

DH did great driving!  While the kids didn't sleep long or well on the planes, here is what 5 minutes in a hot car will do.

 to this...
and I even had the pleasure of not only a sweat spot from his head but a drool spot from his mouth so both pants legs looked well loved by the time we got to our casa.
As quick as they could find their rooms and suits, this is where they all were!
While the older folks got some cooled air inside.

It's everything I wanted it to be.  The home, the weather, the car, the R & R.  While I sit typing this post, the kids, DH and Grandad are in the pool now and Nana is sitting beside the pool soaking up the warmth.  Blessings.  I am so blessed.

Tonight we'll go eat at a place we went to in 2008 so Grandad and DH can have all you can eat fish & shrimp.  A storm is brewing and I can't wait to see the show God has planned for me!

Until next time, Adios and vaya con Dios!!!

Vacation Saving Tips!

I can already feel the sand beneath my feet... hot and gritty.  I hear the waves rolling in and the sound of squeals from the children as they try to outrun the wave and "fail."  I feel the sun beating down and a gentle breeze caressing my face.  I'm on vacation in my mind and soon will be there in person.  Here are some tips for planning a vacation.

Get away from hotels and rent a home!  I have used www.vrbo.com 5 times in the past 9 years and have always had a wonderful experience.  Done Right Management is the site I use for certain locations and we've used them 2 years in a row now to rent the same cabin.  Many people can "use" these site... my secret?

1. Ask for a better deal!  Once you have found a place you'd be interested in renting, calculate how much you're able to spend and make an offer!  I have done this EVERY time and it has worked EVERY time!  Clarify, If they weren't willing to barter, I moved along and found another home to make an offer on.  For every vacation that I have used these rental sites for, it has worked.

In 2008, we rented this 3 story home for 10 days.  There were 11 of us on this trip and it was a great set up for us.  Since we go to Mexico during their slow season, we get awesome deals because these homes just sit empty so something is better than nothing, right?  We hope.  This gorgeous home with a pool and everything we needed was $150/night.  The babe would have been free in a hotel but the others would have cost so, divide $150 by 10 of us and it's $15/person a night!!!

I mean, just look at this place!  Private, safe, secure with the ability to eat at home, relax, swim, nap, read, WHATEVER we wanted to do!!!

This place is huge and so it cost more than we spent in 2003 and 2005 when we rented in Mexico.  Note: We just love Mexico.  VRBO rents everywhere.

In 2003, we rented Casa de los Suenos for $50 a night for hubby, two rug-rats and me.  It was up the hill in Puerto Vallarta and we had to walk LOTS of stairs to get home.  Okay for a first time renting experience.  Price & experience was awesome.

In 2005 I found us Villa Francesca; a condo right in the middle of downtown Puerto Vallarta.  We had my parents with us this trip and Paco was a year old.  This ended up being perfect because we were close to the things we wanted to do and see and could walk everywhere.  I should have gotten us a better deal on this one... the descriptions were not exactly right but because we had a great time, I did not push it.  Live and learn and then I'll share what I've learned so you don't have to start from scratch!  We paid $100/night for this one, divided by two couples so very affordable.

I shared with you our 2008 Mexico home at the beginning...

In 2009 we went to Florida for a work conference.  We stayed at the hotel while the conference was on but then we stayed after for 4 days and I rented us a cool condo in Old Town Orlando.  I asked for a 10% discount and owner agreed!  So, for $95/night in Old Town we rented a 4 bedroom condo!
Take advantage of the pool!  This place came with an awesome water slide!!!

So, don't be afraid to rent a home - you save money and the experience is so much better than staying in a hotel or inn.

2. Plan ahead.  Some things can be planned for so do so!  Unexpected expenses are stressful so plan for them.  You are going to forget something - plan on it.

Buying tickets to tourist attractions in advance can save you HUGE amounts of money.  Plus, you know how much the big ticket things you want to do will cost.  I do this before we leave so we know how much things cost; which eases stress once on vacation.  There are many sites to use for this... expedia, kayak, underground tourist... I spend hours searching for deals.

3. Eat at home.  Just like when you are home, you know eating out is expensive.  Same thing when you're on vacation... if you have rented a home like we do, eat there!  Go grocery shopping, menu plan and then eat at home.  We try to eat 2 meals at home and one meal out each day.  Besides, taking a picnic to some beach is an awesome outing and the kids won't even know that it is "frugal."  They will learn, however, that this is how families take vacations!  Teach by example...

4. Get Organized.  Someone has to have it all together to ease stress and financial splurges.  I keep a 3-ring binder with everything we need to know in it.  Airplane confirmations/schedules, rental car contract, house contract, maps, attractions, purchased tickets, things to do, local restaurants... everything I can think we might need goes in here.  Copies of passports should be in here, too...  I can't tell you how many times my binder has saved us money because they were going to charge us more but since I had it in writing, we got our agreed price.

5. Public Transportation...  yes and no.  Yes in Mexico - it is the only way we got around our first 3 times there.  It's cheap & reliable (and they know where they're going - I think.)  Yes in San Antonio.  Yes in Chicago.  NO in Orlando!  I bought us a week long pass because it was the best deal online.  The schedules were sporadic - it was slow - it was AWFUL!!!  Never again there.

6. Ask the locals.  Don't be afraid to ask people in the grocery store where an affordable place to eat with a family is.  Ask if the portions are large (so you can split, of course).

7. Split Meals.  By splitting a meal and adding a salad you save nearly half the cost.  We do this OFTEN and then after dinner we are able to have dessert someplace else after we have allowed our meal to "settle."

8. DRINK WATER
It is better for you and certainly better for your wallet.  If everyone orders water then nobody feels bad that they had to.  The only exception we make for this is: if it comes with a meal or my mom really needs her coffee.

Which reminds me.... WATER BOTTLES!

Water can be VERY expensive if you are buying it.  So, plan ahead.  You can take an empty water bottle through security and then fill it before boarding.  This also makes it easy to keep whose bottle is whose where what and why while traveling.  If you're not flying, no problem.  FREE WATER from a faucet!!!  There are also some very economical drink mixes you can add to a bottle of water on the go.

9.  Pack what you can.  The closer you are to a beach, the more expensive a plastic bucket and shovels become!  Take it with you, if you can.  We bought snorkel sets in 2008.  We have taken wonderful care of them and will take them with us again this year.  Scouting out Costco can sometimes be a good thing...
Our sets are blue; otherwise they are just like this.  Very nice.  Renting equipment is expensive.  This is something we can do; that is paid for.  All we need is the ocean and we're set!
We also have taken our own life vests when we go to Mexico.  It's nice to know that we don't have to rent one and when you have little ones in a great big ocean, it provides a small comfort knowing they have it on.  Yes, it takes room.  This is a money-saving post... not a space-saving post.

10.  FIRST AID KIT - This might be a given but I mean, really stock that baby for a 911.
We're talking butterfly bandages, water proof bandages, anything and everything you can think of.  Most of you already know I am a long-time Melaleuca customer and I have to tell you, those products saved my son from scars, infections and who knows what else.

11. Travel Snacks.  Healthy is better than not... just saying.

12. Fun-filled backpacks!  This is a surprise!!!  I have the older girls put what they want in their pack and then they give it to me.  I then add whatever surprises I have stocked up on over months and months and come departure day, they get it back!  Granted, I have usually have the night before to fill their packs so I have to be organized...  The boys' packs I fill myself and have lots of NEW things from clearance sections and the $1 store to help keep them busy on the trip.  THIS IS A LIFESAVER!

That's all my brain can think of right now.  I'm sure there's more and if I think of it, I'll let you know.

Happy Vacationing without breaking the bank!!! (or your budget!)

P.S.  CASH has paid for this awesome trip we are taking.  Thanks, Dave Ramsey.  What a great feeling.  Staying close to home for 3 years to take this big one is worth it.

More From The Working Girls Hotel

Here's our suite looking West toward the bathroom.

This little sitting room is between the bedroom and the bathroom - all open doorways. The little lamps are beautiful and you can see the furniture is unique and antique. Check out the old radio!

There are windows above the DOORS! With cool old openers... so neat!

The dining room chairs have ELBOW rests!

We're really enjoying our stay and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a unique experience from the chain hotels. I don't know how the experience would be if we were sharing the space with others but would give it a whirl. For tonight, it's perfect just the way it is!

The Prodigal Son

Our "where to eat contest" has the following rules:
1.) Locally owned - NO CHAINS!
2.) A unique experience
3.) we each bring ONE place to the table and try to convince the other to eat at our pick.
4.) Haven't eaten there before.

I mentiond that DH "won" which means he convinced me to try his place and not the other way around. Mind you, I didn't try very hard to convince him so I didn't feel like a "loser."

We ate at The Prodigal Son Brewery & Pub, blocks from our hotel so we walked. It was drizzling rain but comfortable and we enjoyed window shopping with some picks to go back to tomorrow.

DH got the Pit Boss burger; which is what he saw to make him want to go here in the first place.

He feels the 30 minute way to get our food was worth it once he tasted this juicy spicy burger:

I got the Rueben and did NOT feel the wait was worth it. The bread was soggy, they didn't have regular yellow mustard (how can a pub not have yellow mustard?), A1 sauce (one of the two ways i prefer steak fries, the other is yellow mustard and ketchup mixed) nor did they have honey for my hot water, lemon & honey drink. Besides the fact that the rueben left much to be desired - and I love ruebens!

What else was wrong? I guess since we were not partaking in their beverage of choice (thus the name brewery and pub) we had to ask for water refills each of the three times we were empty. The steak fries were horrible! I ate a few and even DH had several left on his plate and agreed they were "less than desirable." (He's so much nicer than I am!!!)

I would not go back nor would I recommend it. Boo Hoo.

DH, however, might go back just for the burger.

The Working Girls Hotel

DH and I are staying in a former bordello tonight in Pendleton, Oregon. The Working Girls Hotel is part of the Pendleton Underground Tours and it's an amazing hotel. We're the only people staying here tonight so we have the whole place to ourselves. Here is DH in the dining room firing up his laptop for our "where to eat contest."
Here I am posing with the authentic Pendleton wool blanket (MOM, you have one just like this!!!)

DH and his new cowboy friends (the old brick walls are so cool!):

Totally fell in love with the calendar art from 1924!

So did DH...

I'll share more pictures when I can edit them better... the lighting is hard for me to work with but I can't wait to show you the coolest chairs ever! And our room - wow. We booked the suite and it is so nice.

DH won the "where to eat" contest so we're off to The Prodigal Son Brewery & Pub for a mouth watering burger! (No worries, friends...)

Family Vacay

Since I forgot the cable to load pictures from the camera...there won't be any pix on it. Sorry.

We decided at Christmas to take a mini vacay to see my brother who lives in Hailey. This is a long weekend, celebrating MLK Day so we will remember while sledding!

On Sunday after church, we ate a yummy chili meal my Mom had made and hit the road for Hailey! Rain and fog greeted us for the the majority of the drive and warm weather made the roads non-icy.

We arrived at supper time and my brother met us at the Inn before taking us to a fantastic Mexican joint... Lago Azul. RAVE reviews from this family! The portions were generous enough most of us shared an entree. It's a small 10 table joint that has delicious authentic Mexican food. I ordered pollo con crema and shared with my mom, The girls got the same and shared. PLENTY of food. My Dad got chili colorado and the flavor was perfect, meat was tender - yum! DH got lengua en cevollada which he really enjoyed. My bro got caldo de rez and after he'd eaten all the good stuff, the little boys drank the broth! When it was time to pay, I was ready for a pretty good size check since each entree was $10... not really figuring in my head, just going by the amout of food on the table. Total bill - $55 for 9 people and more food than we could eat. Will we go back? YES! My bro eats here about once a week and I can see why!

Fun evening of hot tubbing for the kids, visiting for us old folks and then bro went home, little ones went to bed and DH, the girls and I played Banagrams and Uno til midnight! FUN!

Today will consist of getting dressed, eating and SLEDDING! We stopped and picked up a couple more sleds on the way out of town and we're in for a fun filled of BLUE skies and WHITE snow covered mountains to sled down.

The goal? To have utterly ehausted children for ride home this evening and nothing but fun memories planted in their minds for years to come.
